Ray Martinez, USCF Coach of Brownsville, high-fives student Andy De Leon, of Corpus Christi, upon the conclusion of an unofficial and friendly chess game during the 2011 U.S. Junior Open Chess Championships in Houston hosted by the United States Chess Federation at Hilton Houston Hobby Airport on Sunday, July 24 in Houston. There was 237 participants, and the winner of the 21 and under Junior Open Chess Championship moves on to the U.S. Junior Championship Closed where participants need to qualify. According to Francisco Guadalupe, National Tournament Director, "Chess is a mental game, and it helps develop mind. Studies show students who play chess have improved math skills.
