Oda is WRONG about Romance in One Piece - Forums

This was a very dumb thing to say, and it's not even true (especially for One Piece). Can we please stop this ridiculous "shonen readers don't like romances" BS? They obviously do. Why do you think there are always huge debates about who should end up with who when shonens end. And someone needs to tell Oda that his readers are not "young boys" anymore. One Piece is almost as old as I am ffs - and there hasn't been a significant expansion in new readers for 500 chapters now. The truth is that even if this nonsense about "young boys not wanting romance" was true, One Piece readers are, for the most part, not young boys anymore. They have grown up, but One Piece is not growing up with them. I wish Oda would just be honest; this has NOTHING to do with "what readers want" - why would he keep getting asked this constantly if readers didn't want it? It's so stupid. I think the reality is that Oda can't write an actual romance. He doesn't know how to tell a believable story of two characters becoming romantically involved. That would explain why the world of One Piece is mostly bereft of any romantic relationships. It seems like everyone in this whole goddamn world is single. The only time we get anything even approaching romance is for comic relief - namely Sanji and Boa Hancock
