Regional tournaments are tournaments usually representing an area, state or province of a particular country. Usually, official regional tournaments offer positions to that nation's National Championships for the winner, and other high-ranking participants, in such regional contests. In that sense, regional tournaments can be considered the first step to the World Championships.
